56 acres of good, clean Cerritos fun. My fondest memories here include family and church picnics, tennis on Wednesday nights, jogging along the park perimeter, and running away from scary ducks at the lake. Wait, the last one was freaky, not pleasant.

Park features (http://ci.cerritos.ca....):

* Lake with fishing permitted
* 50-meter outdoor swimming pool open in summer
* Gymnasium
* Multipurpose room
* Tennis courts
* Basketball courts
* Picnic shelters
* Picnic tables

Also, the olympic-sized outdoor pool is FREE to everyone during the summer. The hours are funky: 12:30 - 2:30 PM then 3 - 5 PM. Yes, they take a 30 minute break between their 4 hours of operation. Also, the ONLY thing allowed in the pool area is your body and your bathing suit. I mean this literally. No flip flops, no towels, no foldable chairs, no water bottles, NOTHING!

I'm a die-hard Zion fan...though you'll never hear me calling it "Zion." No, no, young buck, I come from the old skool and pronounce it "Shee-on." I come here for the amazing produce specials, sesame rolls at the bakery, and to drool all over the packaged banchans. Mama mia.

This was the site of my last burfday party, and oh what a treat it was! Gui Rim Korean BBQ has about a dozen different meats on the all-you-can-eat menu, some of which I was too scared to try (e.g., intestines, hearts, etc.). The standard meats (galbi, bulgogi, chicken, pork) were divine.

Service was excellent and servers didn't have daggers for eyes when you asked for banchan refills. Dee-licious!

DISCLAIMER: I haven't stepped foot in a K-Club since 2001. Hence, this review is based on my experiences from back-back-back in the day.

Oh snap - Are you kidding me? Korean night clubs are listed on Yelp? LOL...craziness.

OK, so back in my semi-wild and crazy 20s, Karnak was my spot, yo. I came here at least once a month and pretty much never had to pay more than $20 to my servers, who used to call me and my peeps to "no-ra" (translation: to play!).

Great fruit platters, small bottle of crown, a couple of beers, and you're set to get on the dance floor and shake your goong-dang to the latest beats in hip hop and K-pop.

Sure, booking sucks, but what do you expect at a K-club? BTW, here's a little secret. You'll find out whether you're perceived as attractive or unattractive by the group of fools you get booked with. Are they totally hot and make you blush? Surprise! The waiters think you're a hottie, too! Is the table filled with fugly rejects from the Planet of the Apes? Uuuum...'nuff said.

Oh snap!

Sorry Neul Bom (translation: Forever Spring), you really disappointed me. The place just looked kinda dirty, cramped, and depressing. The service and actual food was pretty crappy, too - the absolute WORST in $9.99 AYCE K BBQ dining (Mr. Lee's in Artesia takes 2nd place).

It was a Saturday night and the place was jumpin' with 90% non-Korean customers, which right off the bat tells you that my own people know this place sucks.

We waited in this tiny little area with chairs next to the door for about 40 minutes - very drafty, cold, and swarming with families and their billion little screaming kids. Once we were seated (at at a table with a busted TV set, no less), it took them 15 minutes to bring water.

The food was blah, as the meat wasn't quality. They also don't swap the grill even though it got all nasty charred. Banchans were depressing and bland.

Honestly, I hate giving 1-star ratings, especially if they're for K establishments, but I gotta keep it real and bring truth to the masses.

This place is magical. Well, not really, but I do like it. I got a hippie and "natural lifestyle" kinda vibe when I came in. The Coffee Table's menu lists typical American fare such as soups, salads, sammiches, pies, and a variety of coffees and teas.

Prices are kind of high, but I think you get what you pay for.

A big ole club sammich, side of onion rings, and lemonade will run you about $13. Delicious, fresh, and the bacon was out of this world.

Min Sok Chon was where I had my 8:30 - 11 PM grub fest on Friday night. Overall, the experience was better than I had expected. The facility was like a huge restaurant with big, wooden tables (everything about this place is wood - very traditional K style), sorta loud K-music, and lots and lots of food.

Service was fantastic. The ajummas don't really speak or understand English, but dang - they are SO nice and hospitable!

Food was aight. We had:

1. Tong Dak (fried whole chicken): decent, kind of on the dry side, but who the heck cares when the skin is fried to a sinfully yummy crisp and you're dunking the meat in your salt/pepper mix or the chili sauce?

2. Nakji gooksu (spicy squid & noodles): I've had way better. The squid was really hard - kind of like compressed rubber bands. I gave up on chewing and was relegated to just swallowing the pieces whole. Bleah.

3. Yogurt soju: yummy!

4. OB beer: light and refreshing - aww jeah

All this and the total bill came out to exactly $45. Prices were totally reasonable with most dishes and anjus (snackies) in the low to mid $10 range.

I might be totally biased about this place because I've only been there once and had their soon dubu (spicy tofu stew). I'll just say this: it was a runny bowl of MSG water and orange dye. Just awful. Even if the BBQ is as fab as other Yelpers say, I don't know if I'm brave enough to come back here.

I'm a big time foodie, and though I have to admit that my palate is on the refined side, it doesn't stop me from appreciating the grub from "lesser" establishments (like good, messy food from hole-in-the-wall mex joints).

That said, I am here to defend Hometown Buffet's honor. The food is good, salads are fresh, and the ambiance is predictable. While you'll never have to worry about pretentious, rich snobs dining here, you will see the parade of moderately behaved children, gluttons of all shapes and sizes, and a gaggle of senior citizens.

I've been going to Hometown at least 3x a year for the last 15 years. As a self-proclaimed expert on their fare, here are my food reviews:

Roast Beef: hit or miss depending on the location. I always get a slice no matter where I am though.

Turkey and Ham: always consistent. Pretty moist and even flavored.

Steak: Usually dry, hard jobs that are seasoned beyond belief...to cover up the jerky texture of the meat.

Baked and Fried fish: you just can't go wrong with this staple. Load up on the lemon and tartar sauce and dig in!

Salad Bar: great selection of everything under the sun. Very fresh ingredients and lots of dressing options. Good Chinese chicken noodles, too!

Desserts: the cookies are usually up to par, but I have had my share of stale macaroons and semi-burnt chocolate chip cookies. I recommend the soft serve and rice crispy treats.

My personal all-stars (faves): BBQ ribs (which they haven't served in years), boiled cabbage, corn nibblets, hamburger patties (they're surprisingly yummy!), chicken noodle soup, chicken wings, bbq baked beans, mac 'n cheese

My foes (dislikes): chicken & dumplings, canned green beans, baked chicken (too dry), any Asian-style dish

EW. First off, I don't even want to waste my time reviewing a freakin' chain restaurant, much less a shiesty one. But, I would be doing a disservice to my fellow Yelpers by not advising how crappy this particular location is!

First off, the staff is SUPER FRIENDLY. Everywhere you go and look, the wait staff and host/hostesses are smiling and asking if everything is ok. Still, even with the warm and fuzzy love, the food just brings the leftover ghosts of Christmas' past to life.

The soup, salad, and breadsticks meal seemed like a safe way to go, until I realized that:

1. The soup base (I tried the watered down sausage soup that resembled pee-water and the e fagioli) was from a can. No doubt. Freshness is not a priority at this joint, folks.

2. The salad was mushy and flimsy. The lettuce reminded me of vegetables on which an elephant sat and farted. My dining companion described the lettuce as old produce that had been sitting on a truck for 4 days.

3. Breadsticks - this is supposed to be the pride and joy of Olive Garden. It isn't.

We also split an appetizer sampler comprising of mozzerella triangles, chicken strips, and fried ravioli. Dry, salty, and clearly heated versions of the frozen variety. Sad.

Kanpachi: CRAP-VILLE USA

There's a line in the movie "Happy Gilmore" where the antagonist snidely tells Adam Sandler, "I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast." I'm convinced that the character had previously dined at KANPACHI SUSHI in Gardena.

I lunched here this afternoon only because of the good Yelp ratings. The food was CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered the $20 combo nigiri lunch plate which included:

- Nasty miso soup w/ slices of turnip, bacon, and carrot (travesty, I know).
- salmon: tasted like a slimy tongue of a rotting sea slug
- uni (sea urchin): the worst, sea vomit aftertaste
-2 pcs ea: cucumber roll & spicy tuna - bland and dry
- tuna: looked and tasted like rotten beef jerky
- unagi (eel): dried, shriveled up, and sad
- some other nasty fish not worth describing

I don't know what the locals are thinking. This place was packed at lunch time. Don't go here, please. There are far better and cheaper places where you can get mediocre sushi.

Kanpachi was worse than 8-week old Yoshinoya leftovers.

7/30/08 EDIT: On behalf of my parents' last 2 dining experiences here, I've replaced my 5-star rating with a 3-1/2 (sorry, Yelp does not allow 1/2 ratings). Remember I once RAVED about Chosun Ok's AMAZINGLY tender and mouth-watering spicy squid w/ noodles? A retraction is in order. They no longer use the tender portions of squid, AND the dish is now mostly comprised of cabbage and noodles. "Where's the squid???" Also, my parents said that the banchans have gotten way too spicy. Sucks :-P

6/29/08:
Oh my gooooodness. Cho Sun Ok was AMAZING. We came here for my dad's birthday dinner, and the food was incredible. This place has a reputation for their spicy calamari noodles (nakji bokkum), and I discovered why. I have NEVER in my life tasted calamari that was so tender it practically melted in your mouth! The spicy paste didn't burn your tongue and it was just the right balance of sweet and spicy.

We also had the naengmyun (cold buckwheat noodles) and I was stunned by the authenticity and standout yumminess of this dish. I've tried naengmyun at one of the most renowned naengmyun spots in Insadong, Korea, and Cho Sun Ok's noodles topped my Motherland experience. Incredible.

I highly recommend Cho Sun Ok! I'm sure everything else is fantastic...if not, you just can't go wrong on the dozen banchans (side dishes) they include with your meal. YUM!

OK, while I admit that I do not like Thai food, I can fairly judge the freshness, cleanliness, and palatability of any cuisine. That said, Thai BBQ Restaurant was a raging disaster.

My review of the food (if you can call it that):

1. Yellow chicken curry: good, but oily as heck. You'll get your recommended supply of lard for the week from a bowl of this hot mess.

2. Mint chicken: my friend says the chicken meat is supposed to be ground. What we got were pathetic wormy strips of leftover dark meat drenched in a minty sauce that was neither refreshing nor light. I've never eaten chicken in cockroach juice, but I imagine this would be a fair description.

3. Tom Yum: this used to be my favorite item off the menu. Over the years, I guess the management got stingy and decided to skimp on the chicken, lemongrass, cilantro...all the material goodness that swam in this broth. Sad.

4. Beef salad. This was garbage on a plate. The beef was overcooked and rubbery. The seasoning was salty and lacked character. Three pieces in, I decided that I could no longer tolerate eating what resembled a cheap leather sole from an old LA Gear sneaker.

5. Rice: It's one thing that Thai places charge extra for the rice. It's quite another when you're paying for a bowl of old, dry, hard, and cheap, 2-day old rice.

Catch my drift? Skip this place if you value your health. BTW, my dining companion had violent diarrhea that evening, and I had a vicious 3-hour stomachache the morning after.

Right in the center of heavy construction and a gravel laden mess stands Italy's Little Kitchen. The parking structure is small, and you may ding your car when trying to park or leave the lot.

The food here was alright. The fatty focaccia bread is warm and yummy. My linguini with white clam sauce was above mediocre, but the shrimp scampi pasta smelled and tasted very fishy.

The reason I'm bent about this place is because there was a damn winged bug the size of a size 10 Ariel font exclamation point in my water glass.

When I told (and showed) the waitress this, she didn't even apologize or look embarrassed. I didn't want to make a big stink of this so I mailed a civil letter to the manager advising that I welcome any efforts they may have to rectify the experience. My address and phone number were included in the letter.

Did they call to apologize (much less send me a coupon/voucher)? No - they did not.

I plan on staying away from the rubble, filth, and management's blatant dismissal of the customer's valid concerns of this place.

I only came in here because of the sign outside that said they had the "Best Burger in LA." I should've known better the moment I stepped into this ghetto dive bar. The single and ready to mingle men were staring at me and my fellow friend. We didn't know where to go or wait since neither the server nor bartender cued us.

Anyway, we ordered an individual veggie pizza (bland as hell, cheese was pathetic) and I got a good, ole fashioned hambuger...nix the "good."

The hamburger was lame. The "meat" patty was plain and looked grayish. The bun was the typical run of the mill, high fructose corn syrup laden white bread. The only good part about my plate were the fries, which were spiked with paprika and some other MSG flakes.

Prices are good (burgers start at around $6), service is not stellar, and the ambiance is kind of dark and creepy. I will never come back here again...even for the fries.

I am embarrassed to even admit that I dined here last night. No, I'm not a food snob, but I'm not partial toward ethnic chain restaurants (Yoshinoya, anyone?). I would not have eaten here had it not been for the "buy 1 entree, get the 2nd for $3.99" coupon I got in the Sunday paper.

Now, on with the 1-star review:

1. BUGS in the water. You know those pesky, dumb baby flies that bumble around in the air? They're kinda like fruit flies but they're black all over? Well, they were pressed against our glasses of water. Not just one fly per glass either. We didn't notice until the end of the meal, but what the hell...I'm sure there were other bugs or parasitic organisms in the rest of the fare that gobbled up those visible bugs.

2. Food sucked arse. Yes. I ordered the 3-item combo:

a. chicken taco - now I know that I can't expect anything "authentic" here, but the shell was so Albertson's generic brand 101. I think Taco Bell's set up is more impressive than this. Also, I tasted cinnamon or some other out-of-place spice. Muy malo.
b. beef enchilada - the sauce was dried on top, there was barely any shredded beef inside, and the tortilla, as with all the other components, was dry.
c. chile relleno - dry and depressing piece of garbage. It wasn't gooey with cheese goodness.

I'm not a happy muchacha, and I'm NOT going back!

My BFF (we're from LA) always brings large, empty tupperware containers inside her suitcases whenever she goes on SF business trips. Why? To fill up on a smorgasbord of pastries and breads from the Washington Bakery & Restaurant.

It must be good, I think, since this is her family's favorite spot. BTW, her grandmother is from the old skool and kicks it with her fellow grammy homegirls at the Mah Jong club in LA's Chinatown on Saturday afternoons. My friend ends up buying an extra 2 dozen breads to feed grandma's masses!

Anyway, I tried a few things from this place and was pretty impressed.

Pineapple topping pasty: I don't know why it's called "pineapple" because that's not what it tastes like. Maybe it's the criss cross formation of the sugary topping that warrants its moniker? In any case, OMG - this bun is the best when it's served fresh out of the oven. You just want to swallow this yummy treat in one gulp!

Cocktail bun: Again, I'm still not understanding the Chinese's naming convention, but who cares when the bread is good? Don't expect a bread and a shot of Patron. This is just another goody that is glossy on top with a syrupy topping and stuffed with a meaty mixture on the inside. A nice combination of slightly salty against tasty breading.

Sponge cake: I was suspicious because it was shaped like an ice cream cone. The cake looked fluffy and yummy - like a "cloud fart," I affectionately dubbed. When I took my first bite, I could immediately taste the fresh eggs whipped up to make this cake. It's like eating a big fluffy egg cleverly disguised as a cake.

The service is good, but, as with most place in C-Town, no one speaks much English. Put your pointing skills to the test and try it out!

So it goes, I've ended my food tasting/reviewing escapades in SF with a $2.15 breakfast sammich from the 456 Deli & Cafe.

I ordered a turkey, egg, and cheese sammich from the friendly and pleasant owner. What I got was a simple, toasted meal from heaven. No mayo, mustard, or extra grease. Just a few layers of fresh, juicy turkey, a slice of melted American cheese, and a fluffy egg (a la McDonald's breakfast) between rye toast. Boom - YUMMY and I don't feel heavy, gross, or guilty as I would had I noshed on fast food.

My only (mini) gripe: they don't serve decaf coffee! What can I reasonably expect though, from a city filled with business folks shushing by with a cup of joe in one hand and a cigarette in the other? I don't think we're in LA anymore, Toto.

Another good but not great place. Yoogo boasts of many interesting gelato flavors. The problem with this is that you don't know what you want unless you look like a total jerk and ask for samples of everything available. Fortunately, the girl who helped out was cool and stoic. I got the lychee gelato in a small cone (about $3) and enjoyed my tasty treat.

Their crepes with gelato are good, too. The only caveat (and this really applies to ALL of these crepe/dessert places) is that the crepe gets rubbery and limp a quarter-way into your consumption.

After all the rave reviews I've read here, I had to check out Uncle Vito's as part of my Tour de San Francisco food tour. I was bummed that they didn't do pizza by the slice since I wanted to expand my pizza research to other reputable places, but it was what it was.

I ordered a small pepperoni pizza and walked a few blocks up to Cybelle's (also on Bush) to try a slice of their cheese pizza (check out my 3-star review).

Uncle Vito's pizza was pretty good, but not as great as everyone here had claimed.

Likes:
1. Very fresh. Merely looking at this pie will make you salivate even if you're not hungry. The colors of the cheese, sauce and pepperoni are vibrant.
2. Crust is wonderful! I'll be the first to admit that I do NOT enjoy pizza crust/dough. I often toss it out as the bread is either undercooked or flavorless. Uncle Vito's crust is thin and yummy. It tastes light and clean - so salty or greasy feeling. It has a delicate slightly sweet flavor which is accented well by the crispy crunch.

Dislikes:
1. Are all small 1-topping pizzas really $10.04? I don't know - seems a little steep to me.
2. Cheese was a little chewy

I think I'd go back, but I would bring my friends and order a specialty pizza or a pasta plate.

Overall:

UNCLE VITO'S: 3 stars
CYBELLE'S: 2-1/2 stars

I'm in my last stretch of my tour of SF, and am tasting pizzas for lunch. I stopped by Cybelle's per friends' recommendations and ordered a slice of cheese pizza. I didn't think my expectations were too high, but I must say I was a bit disappointed.

First bite (impressions):

1. SALTY!!! Mind you, I drown a lot of my food in salt, but this stuff was too much.
2. Ever chew on one of those pink rubber erasers? Neither have I, but the cheese was reminiscent of I imagine the texture to be. I thought that chewing on the slice was going to aggravate my TMJ.
3. The crust was ok; nothing spectacular, and I threw most of it away.

I wouldn't not recommend this place, but I'm sure there are better pizza joints out here. One thing I did like (over Uncle Vito's) is the fact that they serve by the slice.

Food rating: 2/5...AWFUL...just AWFUL!
Ambiance: 4/5...beautiful and clean, but the food is horrible.

Even though I personally don't like Thai food, I know what is good and authentic (having friends of the ethnicity). EVERYTHING we ordered was strangely sweet - like they over did it on the sugar or plum sauce or something. In any case, the food was a wreck and OVERPRICED.

Mango Salad: decent, but not spectacular. Definitely not worth the $10 for this small plate. It costs about $4 anywhere else.

Sea Bass Salad: decent, but not worth $12 considering that the fish smelled really fishy - the mark of UN-freshness. Further, this wasn't even a salad. The presentation was akin to mini lettuce wraps with a tiny morsel of fish and noodles per lettuce cup.

Pad Thai: HORRIBLE. Ever heard of sugar gravy? Well, this stuff was probably dipped in something similar before it was served. It looked like a plate of hodgepodge leftovers that were thrown together at the last minute.

Angry Shrimp: the only thing angry about this shrimp dish was the way it made me feel. The sauce tasted like cheap, sweet Mexican chicken mole sauce that you can buy in a $3 jar next to the Tapatio. The prawns are large and butterflied, but the sauce is like Nutella gone bad.

Tom Yum: Normally one of my favorite soups. Here, the broth is brownish red and tastes like chocolate syrup mixed with too much dried chicken. Trust me when I say this is NOT your mother's tom yum. BTW, I sent this back because I almost gagged from the sweet factor. The waitress (none of them speak/understand English) said they would re-do it NOT sweet. Lo and behold - round 2 comes out sweeter than ever.

Skip Osha - this pretentious wannabe Thai restaurant that caters to fancy folks who don't know any better. Chances are, if you love PF Chang's, you will like Osha. Otherwise, you can find good Thai food elsewhere at the standard $6-$9/entree price range.
