I'm a big time foodie, and though I have to admit that my palate is on the refined side, it doesn't stop me from appreciating the grub from "lesser" establishments (like good, messy food from hole-in-the-wall mex joints).
That said, I am here to defend Hometown Buffet's honor. The food is good, salads are fresh, and the ambiance is predictable. While you'll never have to worry about pretentious, rich snobs dining here, you will see the parade of moderately behaved children, gluttons of all shapes and sizes, and a gaggle of senior citizens.
I've been going to Hometown at least 3x a year for the last 15 years. As a self-proclaimed expert on their fare, here are my food reviews:
Roast Beef: hit or miss depending on the location. I always get a slice no matter where I am though.
Turkey and Ham: always consistent. Pretty moist and even flavored.
Steak: Usually dry, hard jobs that are seasoned beyond belief...to cover up the jerky texture of the meat.
Baked and Fried fish: you just can't go wrong with this staple. Load up on the lemon and tartar sauce and dig in!
Salad Bar: great selection of everything under the sun. Very fresh ingredients and lots of dressing options. Good Chinese chicken noodles, too!
Desserts: the cookies are usually up to par, but I have had my share of stale macaroons and semi-burnt chocolate chip cookies. I recommend the soft serve and rice crispy treats.
My personal all-stars (faves): BBQ ribs (which they haven't served in years), boiled cabbage, corn nibblets, hamburger patties (they're surprisingly yummy!), chicken noodle soup, chicken wings, bbq baked beans, mac 'n cheese
My foes (dislikes): chicken & dumplings, canned green beans, baked chicken (too dry), any Asian-style dish
