After all the rave reviews I've read here, I had to check out Uncle Vito's as part of my Tour de San Francisco food tour. I was bummed that they didn't do pizza by the slice since I wanted to expand my pizza research to other reputable places, but it was what it was.
I ordered a small pepperoni pizza and walked a few blocks up to Cybelle's (also on Bush) to try a slice of their cheese pizza (check out my 3-star review).
Uncle Vito's pizza was pretty good, but not as great as everyone here had claimed.
Likes:
1. Very fresh. Merely looking at this pie will make you salivate even if you're not hungry. The colors of the cheese, sauce and pepperoni are vibrant.
2. Crust is wonderful! I'll be the first to admit that I do NOT enjoy pizza crust/dough. I often toss it out as the bread is either undercooked or flavorless. Uncle Vito's crust is thin and yummy. It tastes light and clean - so salty or greasy feeling. It has a delicate slightly sweet flavor which is accented well by the crispy crunch.
Dislikes:
1. Are all small 1-topping pizzas really $10.04? I don't know - seems a little steep to me.
2. Cheese was a little chewy
I think I'd go back, but I would bring my friends and order a specialty pizza or a pasta plate.
Overall:
UNCLE VITO'S: 3 stars
CYBELLE'S: 2-1/2 stars
